The Heart of America Winds has as a mission to become a full-time, civilian staffed, professional wind band. If that goal is achieved, HoAW will become the first of that genre in the Twenty-first century. All players in the group will be auditioned, have substantial playing experience and possess some kind of degree in music. The degree, however is not a firm requirement. We will take the best player for each chair.

Auditions were held on December 8, 2019. Many first-rate players were heard by a panel of judges, some of whom were world-class musicians as indicated by their reputations and their playing. Not every chair in the band was filled. The second open audition occurred on February 29, 303 at St. Peter and All Saints Episcopal Church, 100 E. Red Bridge Road starting at 10:00 am. These most recent auditions will have no effect on the results of the first auditions. The audition materials are published and available for download on this website (audition information page). If you would be interested in taking part in the second audition, please fill out the contact page and return it to us. That will be your registration. You will be notified of your audition time.
Our official home is both Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas. We are delighted to be in residence at the Paseo Academy of the Fine and Performing Arts. Our rehearsals and performances will occur on this campus, the directors of which have also made available their music library and percussion equipment. We will also have access to other band libraries in the Kansas City area. Our use and performance of published wind band literature is licensed through both ASCAP and BMI as a benefit of membership in the Association of Concert Bands.
Our relationship with Paseo Academy has been graciously arranged through Principal Patricia Hayes and the Kansas City Schools District Office. The director of bands at Paseo is Mark Fangmann. It is our hope that the residency will facilitate not only the development of the Heart of America Winds through access to excellent facilities and a centraizedl performance site, but also we hope to become a resource for Paseo through our work with their band and by serving as an effective tool for recruiting students to study at this excellent fine arts magnet school.
